THE QUESTION

Our family is moving from southern California to Brevard County, Florida and I'm looking for "affordable" shipping options. I already own a 40' container and thought rail might be a good option but I don't know where to start. We have enough stuff to fill the container. I'm open to other ideas as well. Thanks for any input provided!

TL;DR

Shipping a container from CA to FL is a cost-effective moving option, with rail and other affordable alternatives available to transport your belongings.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

Moving to a new city alone can feel like a daunting task, but it's a challenge that many people face and overcome. The root of the struggle often lies in the emotional and logistical hurdles involved - leaving behind the familiar, building a new support network, and managing the financial side of the transition. The good news is, with the right strategies and a solid plan, you can make this move successfully. Start by taking inventory of your belongings using the "Keep & Move, Keep & Buy New, Maybe, Gone" framework from our guide. This will help you determine what's worth bringing, what you can buy new, and what you can let go of to simplify your move. Next, create a money map to understand your relocation costs. This framework from our guide will walk you through estimating expenses like rent, deposits, moving costs, and more. With this clarity, you can start saving and budgeting appropriately. As for your actual move, shipping a container could be a more affordable option than renting a truck, especially for longer distances. Just be sure to research reputable providers and account for any additional fees. You may also want to explore rail or other public transit options, which can be surprisingly cost-effective. When you get the practical side sorted, turn your attention to the emotional aspect. Implement our Reverse Homesickness Prevention Strategy - this involves building your new community and support network before you even arrive. Join online groups, reach out to contacts in the new city, and start planning activities and meetups. Mastering this transition won't be easy, but the payoff is huge. Once you've laid the right foundation and executed your plan, you'll find yourself in a new city, feeling at home, with the freedom and opportunity that a fresh start can bring. It's an exciting journey, and you've got this.
