QUESTION & RESPONSE

My new puppy. He’s only about 5 weeks. I know it’s too early. Most sites only talk about it being bad rather than giving tips on how to help deal with it. He can’t go back to his parents.

A real question from r/puppy that deserves a real answer. Not generic advice — specific steps.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

I feel your pain. Taking in a 5-week-old puppy is a really tough situation - one that most people don't fully understand. The truth is, puppies separated from their mothers and littermates too early often struggle with critical developmental issues like bite inhibition, social skills, and being comfortable alone. This isn't your fault, and it's not the puppy's fault either. It's a product of irresponsible breeding and rehoming practices. The good news is, there are some specific things you can do to help your little guy through this transition. First, focus on building a strong foundation of trust and communication. Use the Graduated Independence Protocol to slowly get him comfortable with being alone for short periods. Pair this with frequent, positive interaction so he learns to see you as a safe, calming presence. Second, start Bite Inhibition Training right away. Teach him that human skin is not for biting, using methods like yelping, time-outs, and redirection. This is key for developing that crucial bite inhibition skill. Finally, make sure he's getting plenty of socialization, but in a controlled way using the Controlled Exposure System. Introduce him to new sights, sounds, and experiences gradually, pairing it with treats and praise so he learns the world isn't scary. This will help build his confidence and social skills. It's going to take some extra time and effort, but if you stick with these strategies from our 5-Week Puppy Rescue Protocol, you'll start to see steady progress. Before long, that fragile, uncertain puppy will blossom into a happy, well-adjusted dog who's fully bonded to you. Hang in there - you've got this!
