A real question from r/Dogtraining that deserves a real answer. Not generic advice — specific steps.
We were taking our dog to dog training school but due to the dog flu we had to stop. We’ve been working on, on-duty and off-duty walking. He can do it if we have a spoon of peanut butter, but as soon as we try to switch to regular treats he can’t do it. Only with the high-value treat of peanut butter. I have been rewarding him less and less. We’ve been working on this for 3 or 4 months. I’m feeling like I’m going to be stuck carrying around a peanut butter spoon forever. When I have the regular treats, he will not look at me ever. Definitely can’t do any on-duty walking, and will pull a lot more when off-duty walking and refuse to come back when I stop - because he’s pulling and call him back before we can continue walking. Loose leash walking issues often stem from an imbalance in a dog's "attention economy." The Attention Economy System in our guide shows how to rebalance this, redirecting that energy and getting your pup back on track.
I feel your pain, friend. That peanut butter spoon scenario is all too familiar for many dog owners. The good news is, you're not alone, and there are practical solutions to get your pup back on track. The root of the problem often lies in an imbalance in your dog's "attention economy." They've learned that pestering, nipping, or pulling on the leash gets them what they want — your focus and reaction. The Attention Economy System in our guide shows how to rebalance this, redirecting that energy into more positive behaviors. Start by resetting the foundation with The Recall Rebuild System. Practice frequent, rewarding recall exercises to strengthen that bond and remind your dog that good things happen when they focus on you. Then, use the Three-Second Freeze technique from The Specific Solutions Protocol to interrupt any leash pulling before it becomes a habit. Finally, be proactive with Redirect with Purpose — when you see that peanut butter spoon coming, quickly engage your dog's brain and nose with a high-value treat or toy. This Jackpot Success will reinforce the behavior you want to see. With consistency and patience using these frameworks, you'll soon have a dog who walks calmly by your side, no matter the temptation. Imagine the freedom and peace of mind when you can enjoy walks again, without the daily struggle. It's life-changing, I promise.
