A real question from r/FinancialPlanning that deserves a real answer. Not generic advice — specific steps.
Is there a guide or does anyone have advice on how to plan for aging parents. My sister and I are in our 40s and trying to figure out how to plan for assisted living, life insurance, etc. it’s sad but necessary. Thanks for anything you have to offer Edit: I want to say they are both in their late 60s. They are fine now but my dad is having some issues that makes me think he will need assisted living within the next 5 years or so (neuropathy, mobility issues, etc). Thanks for the great comments so far!
Plan for aging parents by reviewing insurance coverage, exploring long-term care options, understanding Medicaid/Medicare, and discussing end-of-life wishes to ensure their needs are met and financial burden is minimized.
I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with the complexities of health insurance. The good news is, you're not alone - thousands of people go through this every day. The core issue is that the healthcare and insurance systems are set up in a way that often puts profits before patients. Insurance companies have teams of lawyers and claims reps whose job is to find ways to deny or delay paying out on claims, even for procedures that should be covered. The Foundation Defense System is a great place to start. Get copies of all your policy documents so you fully understand your coverage, what's eligible, and what's not. Build a communication log to track every interaction with your insurance company, and request copies of your medical records. This creates a paper trail that will be invaluable if you need to appeal a denial. The Escalation Protocol can also be a game-changer. If you hit a roadblock, don't just accept it - escalate the issue up the chain of command. Persistently follow up, request supervisors, and get your case heard by someone with decision-making authority. Many issues get resolved once you make it clear you won't back down. Ultimately, this system is designed to be confusing and intimidating. But when you have the right tools and knowledge, you can fight back. Get the information and documentation you need, escalate when necessary, and don't let them wear you down. With the right approach, you can navigate these challenges and get the coverage you deserve.
