THE QUESTION

Since I was a little girl I've been more nocturn. It's so easy for me to have energy in the evening or even the start of the night but at 8am in the morning I'm a zombie. Now, these days I have to wake up at 6.30 am in the morning to go to work, and I struggle a lot, even if I sleep for 7 hours I feel dizzy and sleepy the whole day, I feel tired and emotionally a bit more sad and with mood swings. Everybody tells me, you are going to get used to it, but I don't. The weekends or the days that I don't work I go to sleep at 1 pm cause I want to have social life too and go out a bit too, on free days I can sleep until 10am and feel fine but on work days in the morning I struggle a lot. Any recomendation on how to be a morning person? Or is something that is genetic and can't be changed?...

TL;DR

Establish consistent sleep-wake cycle, expose yourself to morning light, and build a positive morning routine. With discipline, your body and mind can adapt to being a morning person.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

Becoming a morning person is no easy feat - we're all wired a little differently when it comes to our natural circadian rhythms and energy levels. But the good news is, with the right strategies and a bit of self-discipline, you can absolutely retrain your body and mind to embrace those early hours. The core challenge here really comes down to building unbreakable self-control. As our "Self-Control Paradox" guide explains, we often struggle with discipline because we're trying to exert willpower against our deepest impulses and energy patterns. Rather than fighting an uphill battle, the key is to reset your foundations and create an execution system that aligns with your natural rhythms. Start by conducting a "Reality Audit" - take an honest look at your current morning routine (or lack thereof). When are you actually getting out of bed? What activities fill those first few hours? Be brutally honest about your energy levels and decision points throughout the process. From there, you can begin to engineer your "Trigger Moments" - the cues and reminders that will snap you into action each morning. Pair these with "Energy Creators" - the activities that genuinely energize you, rather than deplete your willpower. Finally, put the STOP Protocol into practice. When that alarm goes off and your brain says "just five more minutes," take a pause. Step back, observe your thoughts and feelings, and make a conscious choice about how to proceed. With repetition, this will become a habit - you'll start to automatically make the disciplined choice, without having to fight yourself every single day. When you get this process right, the benefits are game-changing. Imagine waking up feeling refreshed and focused, with a clear agenda for the day ahead. You'll have more time for the activities that truly matter, and you'll cultivate a sense of control and momentum that bleeds into every area of your life. It's not easy, but it's absolutely worth it. So give these strategies a try - your future morning self will thank you.
