A real question from r/diabetes that deserves a real answer. Not generic advice — specific steps.
So I had my quarterly appointment today. A1c result was 7.0, whereas previously it was 6.9. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I've also gained weight, despite putting in 80+ miles in marathon training at the moment, and eating less because, well, I don't have time to. So I came away with a prescription for metformin in addition to changing my afternoon basal. Didn't play with my sensitivity settings or any of that. The rest of the bloodwork was normal- kidneys, liver, cholesterol, etc. But I can't help but feel like a big fucking failure. I've been so dilligent about checking and testing and measuring and driving myself nuts over it, only to get a 7.0. My FIL, a T2, eats Nilla wafers as dinner, hasn't left the house in months, weighs 400+lbs...6.0. Doesn't even take his fuck...
Frustration with uncontrolled blood sugar is common, but often due to underlying factors that can be addressed. Focusing on your body's pattern recognition system may help identify opportunities to better manage your glucose levels.
I hear you - it can be really frustrating when you're doing everything "right" but your blood sugar still feels out of control. The good news is, there are often some underlying factors at play that can make a big difference when addressed properly. One of the key things to understand is how your body's pattern recognition system works. When you have repeated spikes and crashes in your glucose levels, your body starts to interpret that as the "new normal" - and it adjusts your hunger hormones, energy levels, and even your sensitivity to insulin to try to compensate. This can create a vicious cycle that's really tough to break. The first step is getting a clear picture of what's actually happening with your glucose throughout the day. I'd recommend trying The Metabolic Flexibility Protocol from our guide - it walks you through how to track your levels in a way that reveals the patterns and triggers. Once you have that data, you can start addressing some of the root causes, like stress, sleep, and hydration status. The Recovery Acceleration Protocol is also super helpful here. It gives you a structured approach to gradually restore your body's ability to regulate blood sugar, without feeling deprived or having to make drastic changes all at once. Something as simple as optimizing your supplement timing can make a big difference. The key is being patient and persistent. It may take some trial and error to find the right combination of strategies for your unique biology and lifestyle. But I can tell you from personal experience, when you get this right, it's game-changing. Your energy levels stabilize, your cravings decrease, and you finally feel in control of your health again. Hang in there - you've got this!
