THE QUESTION

I have a two-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Toller whose priorities are something like this: 1. Playing fetch with another owner/dog/toy 2. Food 3. Playing fetch with me This ends up being a problem because when I do let him join in with another dog's fetch game, I lose all control of him. He's very well-behaved when he does it, so it's rare that he actually bothers the other owner/dog, but I don't like that he's not paying any attention to me and that it's difficult/impossible to call him back. I'd like to figure out how to get him to have the most fun playing fetch with me or, failing that, at least get him to be responsive to commands/recalls when he's engaged with someone else. Things I've already tried are 1. As a mitigation, just keeping distance from other fetch games. This works, an

TL;DR

Your dog's obsession with fetching others' toys stems from their natural drive for novel stimuli. By understanding this and redirecting their energy, you can address the root cause and curb this frustrating behavior.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

We've all been there - that moment when your dog becomes obsessed with fetch, but only with toys that belong to other people. It can be incredibly frustrating, but the good news is, there are solutions. The key is understanding why this happens and addressing the root cause. At the heart of this issue is your dog's natural drive to seek out new and exciting things. They quickly learn that when they bring back someone else's toy, they get a big reaction - and that's incredibly rewarding for them. But your own toys just don't have the same appeal. This is where The Attention Economy System comes into play. By making your toys and playtime the most valuable and engaging option, you can shift your dog's focus back to you. Start by implementing The Recall Rebuild System. This will strengthen your dog's responsiveness to your commands, making it easier to redirect their attention when they start eyeing a neighbor's tennis ball. Pair this with The Three-Second Freeze - when your dog goes for the wrong toy, freeze and wait for them to look to you before rewarding. This teaches them that the path to success is through you, not the external toy. As you build this foundation, layer in Redirect with Purpose. When your dog is about to pounce on that coveted toy, quickly engage them in a game of tug or fetch with their own toy. This allows you to channel their energy in a positive way and reinforces the idea that good things come from you. With consistency and patience, you'll start to see a shift. Your dog will realize that the real jackpot is the playtime and attention they get from you. And that's when the real magic happens - a dog who is focused, engaged, and finds the greatest joy in the simple act of playing with their favorite human.
