THE QUESTION

Hello everyone, I currently am working as an "eCommerce Assistant" for a small business that sells cabinet hardware online. I have been working here full-time for about 1-1/2 years so far. What I do there is basically upload their products onto about 10 different online marketplace sites (including our own website) and each has their own ways of product submissions. I do that and also deal with returns and some inventory stuff as well. OH and I also do some minor SEO-related stuff and website domain/hosting management as well. Ok, now that's out of the way, I have a question. What skills should I start learning (for 2017) so that I can give more value to the company and possibly earn a bigger raise? I'll tell you this: we currently don't really have a marketing department so maybe I can

TL;DR

Learn e-commerce analytics, digital marketing, search engine optimization, social media, and content creation to increase your visibility, showcase your skills, and provide more value to your current employer.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

Sarah, I feel your struggle. So many talented people get overlooked because they haven't built a personal brand. The core issue is visibility - or rather, the lack of it. When your employer or potential employers don't know who you are and what you're capable of, how can they recognize your true value? The good news is, you can change this. Start by getting crystal clear on your target audience. Who are the key decision-makers who need to know about you? Figure out where they hang out online and offline, and start showing up consistently in those spaces. The Connection Catalyst Strategy can help you map this out. Next, choose content formats that play to your strengths. Do you shine in one-on-one conversations? Leverage the Strategic Networking System to build deeper relationships. More of a writer? Use the Revenue Velocity Framework to create high-value content that demonstrates your expertise. Whatever you do, be relentlessly consistent. Visibility is built over time, through repeated, on-brand touchpoints. Use the 90-day system from the guide to plan out a cadence of activity that keeps you top-of-mind. When you get this right, the change is transformative. Suddenly, the right people will start seeking you out - for promotions, new job opportunities, or consulting gigs. No more wondering if your contributions are being noticed. Your personal brand will do the visibility work for you.
