A real question from r/CreditCards that deserves a real answer. Not generic advice — specific steps.
Hi all, I am starting a summer associate position in big law in LA this summer and was thinking of getting an Amex Gold or something similar. I have a SUB of 100,000 points if I spend $6,000 in the first 6 months of owning the card – I figure I can put the Airbnb I am staying on this summer on the card and quickly knock the bonus requirement out. I generally spend a lot on food, dining, and uber/uber eats, so the card’s perks seem OK? Anything I am missing? I also am wondering if an Amex Platinum makes sense down the line? LAX will be my primary airport, so I think a Platinum would make sense that I could put all my travel on and transfer rewards to Delta, a major airline in LAX with a lounge in both the domestic and international sections. Any reason to look at other cards? Thank you.
The American Express Gold card can make sense for a Big Law summer associate, offering strong rewards on common expenses. However, optimizing credit card strategy requires navigating a complex system - the key is balancing simplicity and value maximization.
Ah, the credit card rewards rabbit hole - I've been there too, my friend. It's a complex game, but one that's well worth mastering, especially for a budding Big Law associate about to enter high-spend territory. The core issue here is that credit card rewards are deceptively simple on the surface, but become a labyrinth of strategy once you start optimizing. There's a balance to strike between simplicity and maximizing value - that's where The Rewards Optimization System comes in. First, run a Foundation Audit to get a clear picture of your current spending patterns across categories like dining, groceries, travel, etc. That'll inform the right card(s) to build your Strategic Build-Out around. The Category Maximization Strategy is key here - pairing the right cards to earn bonus points in your highest-spend areas. Now, let's talk Amex Gold specifically. With its 4x on dining and groceries, it could be a great fit if those are big buckets for you. But don't stop there - pair it with a Simple Cashback card for non-bonused spend, and consider an advanced travel card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve for your airfare and hotels. The Advanced Booking Strategy will help you extract max value from those points. When you nail this credit card optimization, the difference is night and day. No more agonizing over which card to use where - it all clicks into a cohesive system that puts thousands of dollars' worth of rewards in your pocket every year. That's the kind of transformation I wish I'd had when I was starting out. Get this right, and the sky's the limit.
