THE QUESTION

I'm frustrated. I want to take pictures. Portraits, specifically. But I can only take photos of the same faces for so long. I have shot my gf and a handful of friends for months and I need new faces. I hate editing their faces. I'm tired of it. For the past month I have been doing nothing but learning lighting. How to light a face. I want to put the things I've learned to use, but on who? Is it time to move on to models? I've been a hobby photographer for 3 years and have taken it very seriously for 1 year. Can someone help me understand the model/photographer dynamic? Who pays who? What circumstances would a model pay for a photographer and vice versa? I'm assuming there's also a third party sometimes involved that pays both (agencies) sometimes. I need your help r/photography. TL;DR

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

I can empathize with your frustration – the struggle to grow a YouTube channel from zero is all too real. It's disheartening to put in so much effort only to see meager results, especially when others seem to be finding success with less. But know that you're not alone in this experience. The core issue is that growth on YouTube is rarely linear or predictable. The platform rewards specific types of content, audience engagement, and authority – things that take time to build. Simply uploading videos consistently isn't enough, as the reality-based system for growth laid out in our guide points out. The good news is, there are actionable steps you can take today to start moving the needle. First, assess your current content through the lens of The Reality Audit. Are you creating the kind of videos that YouTube's algorithms will favor? Are you tapping into topics and formats that your target audience actually wants? Making strategic adjustments here can pay big dividends. Next, focus on building real relationships and engagement with your community. The Community Post Strategy outlines how to leverage platforms like Reddit to connect authentically, position yourself as an authority, and drive targeted traffic to your channel. This compound effect is crucial for long-term growth. Finally, explore ways to leverage the Authority Acceleration Framework and Affiliate Integration Framework to expand your reach. Collaborating with other creators, getting featured on relevant blogs and podcasts, and monetizing through strategic partnerships can all give you a major boost. When you get this right, the compounding effects are remarkable. Instead of feeling frustrated, you'll start to see a virtuous cycle take hold – more views, more subscribers, more opportunities. It takes time and effort, but the payoff is a thriving, self-sustaining YouTube channel that can become a powerful asset for your creative pursuits.
