THE QUESTION

I’m often conflicted, I get frustrated when specialists don’t see the impact of decisions up and downstream and I’m grateful I’ve went a more generalist route and can see the bigger strategic picture, but also struggle with the feeling I’m not good at anything because I don’t have the specialization I run into on most projects.

TL;DR

Generalists often regret not specializing, as a lack of clear positioning leads to scrambling for clients and delivering a wide range of services without expertise, resulting in feelings of overwhelm and uncertainty.

THE RESPONSE

What’s actually going on here

I can totally relate to the struggle you're describing. It's so common for generalist consultants to feel overwhelmed and uncertain, especially when you're just starting out. The root cause is that without a clear, differentiated positioning, you end up trying to be all things to all people. This leads to a constant scramble to find new clients, deliver all the things, and ending up feeling like you have no idea what you're doing. The good news is, there are some specific steps you can take to get clarity and start building a sustainable consulting business. First, focus on developing your Positioning Protocol - get crystal clear on the specific problem you solve, for whom, and how you're uniquely qualified to deliver results. This will give you a strong foundation to build your messaging, marketing, and client acquisition around. Next, run through the Discovery Framework to deeply understand your ideal clients' needs, challenges, and desired outcomes. This will allow you to craft a compelling offer and sales process that resonates. Finally, put the Lead Generation Framework into action to start attracting the right leads - things like thought leadership content, strategic partnerships, and outbound prospecting. When you get these core elements dialed in, everything changes. You'll be able to charge premium rates, land higher-value clients, and deliver amazing results consistently. Instead of feeling scattered and uncertain, you'll have a clear, streamlined process for growing your consulting business. It takes some upfront work, but it's 100% worth it in the long run.
